Tiles for your kitchen

Selecting tiles for the kitchen is not an easy decision as you have to take different factors into consideration. The tiles that you select for your kitchen should not just be aesthetic to look at but also strong enough to resist stains and other damage. Most people only look for elegant looking styles but ignore the tile’s resistance capacity against scratches and stains. There are various options when it comes to choosing the right tiles for your kitchen. The two most common options are Pressed tiles and Extruded tiles.

There are two sub-categories of tiles under Pressed tiles. They are termed as Mono-cottura and Bi-cottura. Mono cottura tiles are produced under very high temperatures which makes them quite strong. Mono cottura tiles have a strong base which can easily withstand strong impact. On the other hand, bi cottura tiles are not as strong enough as Mono cottura tiles. Bi cottura tiles are known more for their stylish and aesthetic looks. They have a low resistance capacity compared to their counterpart.
Porcelain tiles
Another popular option you have for kitchen tiles is porcelain tiles. Porcelain tiles are widely used by many home-owners. Porcelain tiles are also termed as another variant of Pressed tiles. An advantage of porcelain tiles is that they are extremely durable and thus they are an ideal tiling option in commercial spaces like malls, offices and restaurants where it is not feasible to keep changing the tiles frequently. Whichever type of tiles you select for your kitchen but two things need to be considered well in advance. They are durability of the tiles and ease of cleaning.

Replacing damaged ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles
Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are known for their aesthetic value and long shelf life and they come in various shapes, sizes apart from varying degree of thickness. Sometimes, harm may be caused to the ceramic tiles when a hard object smashes the floor. Damaged ceramic tiles need to immediately removed and replaced. Once you see that any of your ceramic tiles is damaged, you need to purchase new ones. The damage may have caused uneven ends at the corners. This requires correct shaping to be done. Once you are done with shaping, you have to start the procedure of laying the tiles. To lay the tiles, you need to first prepare the floor surface. To start with, you need to remove all the broken pieces of the ceramic tiles. Having done this, hack the dry grouting that is present beneath the surface of the tiles. While doing this, care should be taken to ensure that the surrounding tiles are not harmed. Ensure that you clean all the debris before proceeding with installing the tiles. When you finally start replacing the broken tiles and fitting new ones, you should see to it that you do not harm the existing tiles which are in good condition. Before you start laying the tiles, wet the surface and let it be for around forty minutes. To even the surface, a mixture of cement and sand is used. The ratio is two parts of sand to one part of cement which gives a rich mixture. Add the right amount of water to make the mixture consistent. Spread the mortar in the area. Put the cement grouting on top of the surface. After this, lay the tile on the top and use a mallet to level the tile while pounding it.
