In a crowded city, where everyone is pressed for space, any idea that helps to save floor space is always welcomed. Though you may not be a lucky one to own a spacious penthouse or a 3BHK apartment, you should not lose heart. For, there are many options available when it comes to designing a small apartment. Below are some simple ideas to execute to make your small room spacious enough.

Remove the trash
There may be too many small things in your drawing room eating up a lot of floor space. What you can do is dump all the old antique pieces and other small things in a big box to dump them forever. Keeping them in the room will only make your room look cluttered. You need to sit down and decide what is absolutely essential that occupies a good amount of space in your room. Be specific about what you want in your room and get rid of all unwanted things.

Window treatments
You may find those heavy window treatments as a pleasure to the eye but you have no idea how much space they end up occupying in your small room. Apart from the space that they occupy, they also block the outside light to an extent from entering your room. Instead of those bulky window treatments, you can opt for window shutters, blinds or shades. Blinds are a great option as they occupy little space and can give your room the desired look. One visit at the interior décor store and you will be amazed to see the different types of blinds available. If you are flexible with your budgets, then you can also opt for custom designed blinds that complement your home interiors.

Wall paint
Though painting walls with bright and bold colours is an in thing, remember that bold colours only make your room small and cramped. Opt for lighter shades and hues and as far as possible, paint all the walls in the room in a single colour. If you wish to break the monotony, then opt for similar shades and hues. Lighter shades create a feeling of openness and an illusion of a spacious room.
These are three simple steps that you can follow to make your room appear larger. Surely, you must be impressed with these ideas as the idea of a big room always excites everyone.

  1. Hi!

Do you have any ideas on how to make a room or an apartment looks spacious? I have a hard time in organizing my stuff because I can't throw them away. Most of them are very important to me and some are office files. I'm planning to buy binders, bookends, and make a small cabinet for my books and files. Can you give me tips about buying good binders and bookends? Thanks!

  2. Hi Jake,

Some tips to make your room looks spacious!

    1. Clean It Up:
Being able to see the tops of your surfaces is always a plus. Clear the clutter and try thinning down a collection or two to lighten the visual load.

    2. Lighten Up:
Overhead lighting can be harsh and make things feel a little drab. Try adding a few uplights, table lamps or even rope lights behind your headboard or sofa to give things a soft glow. By reducing the shadows and lighting things up a little, your space will not only feel warmer, but larger as well.

    3. Reflect, Reflect, Reflect:
Although mirrors above the bed are probably out in most cases, sneaking them in around the home is a fabulous idea. Sure you can hang them on the wall, but try placing a mirrored plate under a lamp or attach a few to the front panel of a night stand and you'll bounce light and more space all around.

    4. Reach for the Sky:
It's easy to hang things at eye level and curtains at the top of the window. Instead try taking things all the way to the ceiling to fool the eye. If you can't make the floor plan bigger, make it feel taller!

    5. Shrinky Dinks (Furniture):
It doesn't matter if you've had your eye on the most amazing couch for the last 4 years and you've been saving to buy it. If it doesn't fit and will impede the sense of flow around the room, it's time to look at alternatives. Although your pieces might feel just fine, reducing the overall footprint things can help free up some space physically and mentally.

    6. Furniture
Multipurpose furniture, like sofa beds, folding tables, and beds with drawers, can be used for a variety of purposes, while saving space. Making use of such furniture will help you avoid the cluttered look. At the same time, scale the furniture, to fit the size of the room. Instead of filling it with many small furniture items, go for a few big-sized ones. Furniture shouldn’t block your pathways, as it makes the room feel cramped. Having furniture in the same color as the wall color makes the room looks bigger. You should set your furniture at an angle, instead of placing it in a straight line, as it gives the deception of space.

    7. Maintain Coordination
Instead of going for zigzag designs, use subtle colors in your room and coordinate them with your decoration, to give a calming effect. Work to create long lines and use similar colors. Avoid colorful wallpapers; rather go for simple, sober ones. Flimsy fabrics work best for windows drapes and tablecloths, while plain upholstery and a few pieces of art and accessories can enhance the overall appeal.

    8. Avoid Clutter
A room that is full of clutter looks much smaller that it is. So, keep your room tidy and neat, to make it look spacious and maintain a general hygiene. Everything should be arranged in an order. Keep the floor clean and instead of covering it with many small rugs, go for one single, big one. Make sure to let some part of the floor be seen too, as it gives the illusion of more floor space.
